Keeping Our Children Safe: The Vital Need to Conduct and Enforce Background Checks for School Bus Drivers

Commercial truck drivers who deliver vital commodities across the United States must pass thorough background checks and meet stringent safety regulations.

Yet a recent CBS News investigation revealed that many school bus drivers – the people charged with protecting the safety of children on the road to and from schools and summer camps – are not held to the same exacting standards. And the results of such leniency have occasionally proven catastrophic.

According to the article, there are approximately 22,000 bus crashes a year, leaving thousands of students injured. And on average, at least once a week a school bus driver is arrested for driving under the influence, child pornography, or even sexual assault.

Background Checks and the International Workforce

Today, businesses are becoming international enterprises far earlier in their life-cycle than ever before.

Perhaps it’s because it’s now easier and faster to travel overseas and, thanks to technology, easier to collaborate with staff, vendors, consultants, and others around the world (potentially eliminating the need for travel altogether).

An employee no longer has to physically be located in a company’s main office to be productive. And recruiting now recognizes that talent may reside across national boundaries.

Finding talent in another country may now be requisite, but it also demands extending background screening to best ensure the hiring not only of top tier talent, but to help to reduce risk and safeguard security as well.
